Context
Burning Man is an annual gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert where large-scale art, mutant vehicles, and radical self-expression define a temporary city of 70,000 people. In 2018, Sanctuary debuted: a mobile cathedral and nightclub, blending sacred architecture with music, fire, light, and lasers. Its design drew on religious motifs from multiple traditions, crafted with meticulous detail and true artisanship.
The Performance
Sanctuary rose above the playa like a gothic church on wheels. By day, its facade suggested stained glass and temple architecture; by night, it came alive with propane flames, arena-class sound, and a mix of high-powered lighting and lasers that transformed it into a roving dance floor. Hundreds danced on board and in front of Sanctuary as it moved across the deep playa.
Laser Design
PRECISION supplied Sanctuary with five custom-built audience scanning lasers, designed both to withstand the extreme desert environment and to deliver ultra high-powered effects. The vast scale of the playa made it possible to run brighter audience scanning shows than possible at a normal festival.
We had the opportunity to project a classic Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon animated laser graphics show onto a giant dome and the side of the 747 party jet — a tribute to the early masters of laser shows that gave attendees an unexpected and memorable experience.
Reception
Sanctuary was quickly hailed as one of 2018’s standout mutant vehicles. The official Burning Man Journal praised its “sound, lights, fire and intricate detailing that highlight true artisanship.” Burners called it “my favorite art car of all time,” “beyond spectacular,” and “the best sound, best visuals, best design, best crew.” Even longtime participants admitted their jaws dropped when it appeared on the playa. Praise consistently pointed to the fusion of craftsmanship, scale, sound, and spectacle.
Outcome
Sanctuary was a singular marvel of Burning Man 2018 — a fully mobile cathedral of sound, fire, light, and lasers. It broke new ground with the first permitted audience scanning effects on playa. Sanctuary never returned after 2018, making its impact on the playa a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
