ernie ball x Jason richardson: sparrow
Purpose of the Project
Ernie Ball Music Man set out to launch the Jason Richardson Artist Series Cutlass guitars with more than a traditional demo. The company wanted to capture the same intensity that defines Richardson’s playing—seismic riffs and lightning-flash solos—with a visual language that could stand alongside his music and the bold design of the guitars.
Our Role
PRECISION was brought in to design and execute a series of laser-driven performance videos. Working with Ernie Ball’s production team, we created a fully programmed suite of Laser Banding effects that transformed each performance into a high-impact visual showcase. Every cue was pre-built, tested in studio, and synchronized to Richardson’s compositions to ensure the lasers moved in lockstep with his playing.
Lasers as the Visual Language
Laser Banding allowed us to generate shapes and patterns that only appear through the camera lens—sweeping wings, gravity-defying beams, liquid spotlights. These effects mirrored Richardson’s speed and precision, surrounding him with aggressive, futuristic visuals that amplified the drama of each song. On camera, the beams became an extension of the music, translating shred into light.
Jason Richardson’s Experience
Jason embraced the over-the-top presentation, joking that the “only thing that could make this new guitar more epic is lasers.” He recognized that the laser environment elevated the showcase, turning what could have been a standard playthrough into a cinematic performance that matched the technical flair of his music and the guitars bearing his name.
Ernie Ball’s Use and Distribution
The videos premiered across Ernie Ball Music Man’s website, YouTube, and social channels, tying each performance to a specific instrument model and finish. In pieces like “Poomba” and “Sparrow,” fans saw new guitars revealed under searing beams of light—presentation that underscored the guitars’ cutting-edge design and connected directly with the progressive metal audience.
Recognition & Acclaim
Fans and musicians responded with enthusiasm, noting the spectacle and sharing clips across forums and social media. Guitar publications covered the new models and embedded the videos, while lighting professionals discussed the technical execution as a standout example of in-camera laser design. The reception confirmed that the production made viewers stop and take notice—exactly what the launch required.
Outcome
The project achieved Ernie Ball’s goal: a product launch that felt as bold and distinctive as Jason Richardson’s playing. The lasers conveyed intensity, precision, and modernity, amplifying both the guitars’ presence and the artist’s identity. The result was a series of performances that blurred the line between demo and music video, leaving a lasting impression across the guitar community and beyond.
