Context
Bondi Sands, an Australian self-tanning brand known worldwide for its science-driven products, launched Technocolor, a range of self-tanners tailored to different skin tones. To introduce the collection, the brand created Technocolor: The Movie — a short film and campaign centerpiece designed to dramatize the idea of personalization through technology and color science.
The Commercial
The film opens with scanning beams sweeping across the faces of the actresses, a visual metaphor for laser skin analysis — the research technology Bondi Sands used to develop the range. As each scan completes, the actresses pixelate and dissolve, transported into the Technocolor Dimension. In this new world they are surrounded by vivid, high-tech visuals, the environment transformed into a futuristic realm of color and light.
Laser Design
PRECISION designed the laser effects that defined the commercial’s look. Audience-style scanners tracked across faces, casting real light that made the pixelation and teleportation effects seamless on camera. Once inside the Technocolor Dimension, Laser Banding surrounded the actresses with floating ribbons and sheets of light, creating an immersive, otherworldly space. These practical effects blended with VFX, giving the digital enhancements a believable foundation and a tangible connection to the performers.
Reception
Bondi Sands premiered the film at a Hollywood launch event, where guests entered through a laser-lit tunnel before being immersed in a venue filled with beams, projections, and neon light. Press described the party as a “laser-filled Technoverse”, with the spectacle becoming as much a talking point as the product itself. Social media coverage and influencer posts highlighted the futuristic visuals, and the event generated hundreds of millions of impressions across press and social channels.
Outcome
Lasers provided the narrative thread that connected the commercial’s story with the brand’s science-backed message. The scanning effects visualized personalization; the Laser Banding sequences built the fantasy of the Technocolor Dimension; and the same language of light was extended into the real-world launch event. The result was a campaign where practical laser effects not only heightened the spectacle but also reinforced the brand’s claim: a tanning range as innovative and tailored as the technology used to create it.
